Due to the insane Super Fire Storm raging across the county this week, we've done nearly nothing.
That is actually not at all true.
Rather, we've taken a 100% unschooling approach this week.
We've watched the news all week and talked about everything from the fires and the evacuations to the difference between wildfires and housefires, fire safety, smoke in the air, ash, and anything else that could possible be related. We have been watching the evacuations and packed up when they started coming closer to us even though we never did get the call. *Whew!*
Today, I was actually proactive and took M into the bathroom to show her how oxygen (wind) feeds a fire, and how ash is made. In so doing, I also quizzed her relentlessly on fire safety (i.e. never, ever, ever do this on your on!). Later we talked about stop-drop-and-roll, and where to escape if she's trapped alone in her room and there is a fire.
She is handling it all pretty well. A little nervous when we talk about what to do, but general she is very brave and the more we talk, I think the more it will become normal for her.
Other educational stuff we've done... We've made tons of paper flowers (inspired by UN Sunday last week at church), we've practiced counting and singing with E, we've decorated our altar to reflect the season, and we have done tons of coloring.
Anyway. That's where we are at. If you'd like to see some photos of the effects we've seen of the fires, click here.
